News Updates from Clayoquot Sound

The excitement of spring is upon us and we are on the water again for our 22nd season.

Whale Migration and Spring Events

March 22, 2009 The Pacific Rim Whale Festival has just wrapped up but the spring migration of grey whales is far from over. For the Festival, Tofino Sea Kayaking (TSK) and Wildside Booksellers hosted Judith Williams who gave a fascinating presentation on her book ‘Clam Gardens, Aboriginal Mariculture on Canada's West Coast', available in our bookstore. This book challenges the way we think of coastal natives as hunter gatherers and gives new evidence of a culture of cultivators. Now that we know what to look for, we'll be watching more closely as we paddle the along the shores of Clayoquot, seeking evidence of historic land use in this area.

What's Happening at 320 Main?

Renovations have once again taken place in the Company Store and we hope the arrangement of service counters, sitting and meeting areas will provide a better space in which to plan trips, gather information or simply meet over coffee and goodies to share stories of your experiences in Tofino and Clayoquot Sound. We still offer our free wireless access and the paddling information centre' as a resource for independent paddlers.

Good news for Java Junkies

Speaking of the Coffee Bar we are excited too about a change in our coffee supplier. We will now be serving brewed and espresso Karma Coffees - www.karmacoffee.com . After a long search we have identified this regionally located roaster as a supplier of the best tasting coffee we have found to date and better still, it's organic and fair trade. With the coffee we are serving wonderful sweets and savouries from Tracey Crocker of Sweet T's, a fine local bakery. When this building was a Hotel back in the 40's and 50's it was famous for its pies and Tracey has taken the challenge to create delicious pies using a compliment of local ingredients when seasonally possible; blackberries, blueberries, cranberries.

Keeping Green

The local Chamber of Commerce has facilitated a series of Green Business Meetings. Tofino Se Kayaking will implement recommendations from these meeting to improve our impact on the environment. Some actions include reviewing and upgrading our composting system, supporting initiatives to raise awareness about tanker traffic on the BC Coast and implementing an anti-idling policy for Tofino Sea Kayaking vehicles (not that we idle our vehicles but we want to formalize our commitment to this).

For more information on the call for a moratorium on tanker traffic along the BC coast go to www.notankers.ca
